PRESS RELEASE
D.i.Re presents the new 2024 data report:
The number of women welcomed by the Network's anti-violence centers is increasing
Like every year, D.i.Re – Women in the Network against violence has also developed for 2024 the photograph of the Network of anti-violence centers and the activities carried out on the national territory.
Il new report records an increase in the number of women welcomed by the Network's anti-violence centres: in 2024, a total of 23.851 women were welcomed (23.085 in 2023).
Of the 113 centers in the network that participated in the survey, 77 (68%) manage a total of 204 anti-violence centers throughout the country, offering women more opportunities to embark on their journey out of violence.
"The report on data relating to women welcomed by the anti-violence centers of the network D.i.Re in 2024 and all the actions implemented by the thousands of activists who have expressed highly specialized skills every day, speaks of strength and determination, but also of the choice of tens of thousands of women who are increasingly turning to our centers" – declares Cristina Carelli, president D.i.Re – Donne in Rete contro la violenza. "These are women who recognize in each of us a respect for their experiences and a desire to fight for their freedom and that of all women. Given these results, we would expect more active involvement in the development of so-called anti-violence policies, the shortcomings of which are clearly affected by the absence of our contribution.” concludes the president.
The centers guarantee Telephone reception, welcome and listening and the possibility of legal advice in all cases; almost always job orientation courses (96% of centers) and psychological counseling (91% of cases). Approximately three out of four centers are able to offer counseling for illegal immigrant women (72%) and well over half of them guarantee a 24-hour availability and offer services to foreign women (62% in both cases). Furthermore, more than half of the centers coordinate self-help groups and support women through parenting advice (58% and 52% of cases, respectively). A comparison with 2023 shows a growing trend for activities aimed at foreign women: services aimed at foreign women (+7,4%) and for counseling illegal immigrant women (+5,7%). It is also important to point out the continuous growth of the centers that identify job orientation courses (+2,7%).
As in previous years, in 2024 it was the volunteers who supported the activities of the centers: 3.739 activists in total, thus recording an increase of 462 activists (+14%) compared to the previous year. Compared to 2023, despite a significant increase in total female activists, the percentage increase for new paid activists is only 3 points versus 7 last year.
The Centers live mainly on volunteers and financial resources that are still insufficient despite positive changes being recorded every year.
Nearly half (46,7%) of women are between the ages of 30 and 49; they were 46,5% in 2023 and 47,3% in 2022. Young women aged 18 to 29 represent 17%, while those between 50 and 59 are still just over 15%.
The most common form of violence experienced by women in shelters is domestic violence (82,2%), followed by physical violence (56,5%). At least one in three women experiences economic violence, while sexual violence and stalking are found in a lower number of cases (16,9% and 16,3%, respectively).
Only one in four women welcomed is of foreign origin and, considering the unemployed, housewives and students, it is clear that almost one in three women (29,5%) does not have any type of job and therefore has zero income.
Despite a slight percentage increase, the number of women who decide to report remains very low: 32% in 2024, compared to 28% in 2023.
As far as the perpetrators of violence, almost half (49,6%) of the abusers are aged included in the 30-59 age group, increasing compared to 2023 (45,4%) and in three cases out of four it is ItalianOnly 26% are foreign nationals. The abuser has a stable job, with 47,8% of them employed or retired.
In In 74,3% of cases, violence is perpetrated by a man in an emotional relationship with the woman. If we add to this figure the percentage of cases in which the perpetrator is a family member, the figure reaches over 83%.
In 2024 the network will have a total of 60 shelters, down compared to 2023.
Compared to the previous year, there is a significant increase of 6 points for the Northern area percentages, given that in 2023 the percentage was 56%. This increase is actually due to the 9 percentage point gain in the Northeast, offsetting the 3 percentage point decline in the Northwest; the Center saw a 3 percentage point decrease, after a significant 13 percentage point gain last year. The Islands maintained 5%, while the South saw a 4 percentage point decline, the same amount it gained in 2023 compared to 2022.
The reasons for these changes are linked to funding, both at the disbursement and at the level of distribution, which show instability every year and do not guarantee the possibility of covering the necessary costs. This uncertainty means that, once again the number of beds is insufficient: it was not possible to secure 947 women (673 in 2023).
The centers of the D Network.iKings who welcomed In 2024, 99 out of 113 women were refugees or asylum seekers. Altogether they are 328 women who have addressed to an anti-violence center, of which 65 were hosted in a shelterThese are relatively young women, predominantly between the ages of 18 and 39 (71,7%). The percentage of psychological violence (83%) is in line with the overall rate of cases (82,8%), while the percentage of physical violence is higher (78,10% vs. 54,2%), as is economic violence (42,60% vs. 33,9%).
The abuser is almost always the partner, ex-partner or a family member: in 94,9% In some cases, it is therefore a person in close relationship with the woman.
Of the 113 Centres that participated in the survey, 49 in total welcomed women with disabilities: 348 women in total they turned to an anti-violence center.
Almost all the centers (over 82%) are accessible to women with motor disabilities who in 2024 are the 32% of all new women with disabilities. Women with intellectual disabilities (20%) and sensory disabilities (10%) also turned to the centers, while 38% had another type of disability. Of the women with disabilities welcomed, 91,5% had experienced violence from a person with whom they had a significant emotional bond.
