The Court of Appeal of Genoa confirmed the 2019 sentence pronounced by the Court of Savona against Matteo Camiciottoli, mayor of Pontivrea accused of defamation against Laura Boldrini, then president of the Chamber of Deputies.
Boldrini had sued the Northern League mayor who, following the rapes that took place in Rimini in 2017, had suggested sending the rapists "to Boldrini's house, maybe they will put a smile on her".
The damages had been quantified at €20.000 for Laura Boldrini and €100 for each of the Associations that had filed a civil action.
The confirmation of the conviction has a double meaning: to keep firm the condemnation of sexist attacks and to recognize the role of anti-violence associations.
D.i.Re – Donne in Rete against violence filed a civil action alongside Laura Boldrini in the first instance together with:
- Center for not being subjected to violence
- Difference woman
- If not now, when?
- National hearing
"It is the confirmation of an important recognition in favor of the Associations, among which D.i.Re – Donne in Rete contro la violenza. The judges, in addition to having criminally punished the seriously defamatory comment published by the defendant, gave voice to the Associations that fight daily alongside and for women against all forms of violence and sexist stereotypes” declares Nadia Calafato, lawyer of the Network of lawyers D.i.Re.
